Confessions of A Shopaholic :: On Set With Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara

Isla Fisher, Confessions of A Shopaholic, Touchstone Pictures 2009 (Image Source: WireImage)

I had heard some buzz before about Neutrogena's Healthy Volume Mascara, but it wasn't until I recently read in an article that it's being used by a celebrity makeup artist on set of a movie; that it really caught my interest. Makeup artist Elaine Offers used Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara on Isla Fisher while filming the highly-anticipated 'Confessions of A Shopaholic' which is slated to be released in 2009.

"Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara is a must have in my makeup kit when on location...just used it on Isla Fisher during filming of 'Confessions Of A Shopaholic'...it volumizes beautifully, while conditioning lashes with olive and almond oil." - Elaine Offers, Celebrity Makeup Artist
For starters it's called Healthy Volume because it contains the triple benefits of olive extract, meadow foam seed and sweet almond for fuller, more conditioned lashes. So what exactly do these ingredients do and why are they important? Let me give you the breakdown:
  • Olive Extract - penetrates to help moisturize the center (medulla/inner cortex)
  • Meadowfoam Seed - helps to bind moisture throughout the middle layer (outer cortex)
  • Sweet Almond - wraps around the outer layer (cuticle) of every strand, helping to seal moisture in for long lasting benefits
Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara also claims to deliver up to 400% fuller lashes and promises not to flake or clump.

So what were the actual results like? Well keep reading to find out!

A Beauty Favorite That Does NOT Win Me Over :: Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

Here it is. It's Maybelline's Great Lash Mascara. A product in which beauty editors across the land swear by. But I...just...don't...get...it! As you've heard me brag, and whine in the past about my itty bitty lashes; it is vital that I find a mascara that can deliver length, thickness, wearing power, and jet black pigmentation all while leaving the nasty clumps behind. But does Maybelline's Great Lash do any of that for me? Um...no.

The brush is nothing special, it clumps my lashes, the formula tends to flake off after wearing for a few hours, and not even their "Blackest Black" shade is, well...'black' enough for me. Again, I...just...don't...get...it!

Maybe I'm just being too picky on this product? But why are there woman that swear by this? Maybe its good on naturally long and lush lashes only? It sure doesn't do anything for my little ones. So what is it about this mascara that makes it a beauty cult favorite? Have you tried Maybelline Great Lash? If so, what do you think about it? And while, we're on the subject tell me what you're expectations are for mascaras. Let me know! I think I may be overreacting here. :)

Lancome's New Buzz...Not For the Cheap?

Earlier in the month, I introduced Lancome's newest mascara to soon hit the market Lancome Oscillation. While U.S. prices are not yetskaka.jpg availible, it has been determined what the cost of this mascara will be across certain European markets. Danish consumers will be paying 360 Kroner for this elusive mascara when it releases in November. That translates to an estimated $75.00 USD!!! While we dont yet have official U.S. price information for this release, it still however does make us wonder if Lancome will indeed make us pay that much for this anticipated eyelash blessing. What do you think of Lancome's price tag? Would you still consider it? Or is it worth the cost? Let me know!

Mascaras Take On A Whole New Spin...Literally

As you know and as I have mentioned before, I am the ultimate test dummy for any mascara out there that is willing to give me the lashes that I have always wanted. And it now seems like I will be pretty busy in the next coming months testing out some very interesting new releases that are on the horizon.

In a recent WWD article, mascasras are all the buzz and spinning mascaras are even a bigger buzz! We all know there was a big craze with the Spinlash release a few months back (which I have yet to try); and from what I read the reviews were pretty mixed. It seemed like either a love or hate product. But now, some big makers like Lancôme and Estée Lauder, as well as L'Oreal and P&G have jumped on the buzzing trend and will all be launching their own spinning and vibrating versions pretty soon!

el_turbolash.jpg

"The cosmetics giant is set to release TurboLash All Effects Motion
Mascara, which the brand is touting as the world’s first

battery-operated, vibrating, all-effects mascara. It will be launched on July 17 as a Saks Fifth Avenue exclusive.

“There is a relationship between vibration, length, volume, separation and curl,” said Elana Drell-Szyfer, senior vice president of global marketing for Estée Lauder.

“Together, they deliver an unbelievably enhanced first to market product, which we feel is revolutionary.” — WWD

Sounds neat doesn't it? As for the vibrating technique (not to be mistaken with spinning), this mascara wand will gently vibrate  allowing for more grasp of the lashes and also allowing for more of the formula to cover each lash...sort of similar to when you apply your mascara and gently wiggle your hand from left to right. Not only will this help coat the lashes better but it will also help seperate better and prevent clumps. I can't wait for this to hit the counters!

"Lancôme’s Oscillation mascara also is billed as revolutionary by company executives, thanks to its brush that (as the product name suggests) oscillates.

Jean-Louis Guéret, creator of mascara brushes for Lancôme, said he came up with the idea for Oscillation after watching makeup artists at work. While applying mascara, their hands move in a zigzag pattern. So to best emulate the movement, Guéret explained, he conceived a flexible, polymer-based mascara brush that vibrates along its longitude at 7,000 micro-oscillations a second. Getting the battery-powered movement started takes simply pressing lightly on an area of the mascara’s outer tube, which turns on a 3-centimeter motor.

Guéret said that, as the mascara brush vibrates against eyelashes, they become “organized” and evenly coated with a mascara formula conceived with ultrafine particles specifically for the product, which also extends, curls, shapes and makes lashes seem thicker. He claims Oscillation’s Ultrafine Dispersion technology allows mascara to glide easily onto lashes and for rapid application. — WWD

Now this my dear, is something that I will DEFINETLY be trying out. I am a firm believer that  Lancôme indeed does make the best mascaras ever. I don't know what it is but their formulas are amazing. They are probably the only company out there with a star line-up of mascaras, and currently they have me hooked on their Fatale which since trying I have never looked back to my previous Diorshow. Unlike the Estée Lauder TurboLash above, this mascara actually rotates, similar to the Spinlash, so not only do you get the precise vibrations but you also get a rotating wand to ensure that you get your lashes precisely coated with the formula.

This baby however won't come so soon as the Estée Lauder one; its release date is slated for this Fall, but boy I cannot wait until this hits stores. I am sure this one will be big!

So with these new powered mascaras and also the Givenchy Phenomen Eyes which I introduced last month, are traditional mascara wands now a thing of the past? What do you think of the latest technology? Innovative or just hype? Does it catch your eye? If so, what will you be getting your hands on? Share your thoughts. Let me know!

Ask Roselyn: "What kind of eye makeup remover do you reccomend?"

Q: Hi Roselyn. What kind of eye makeup remover do you recommend? Miriam, Orlando, FL

A: So glad this question was brought up. If you must know the truth, I don't recommend ANY eye makeup remover out there. Why? Well I have tested many, and with super sensitive eyes I just have yet to find one that is decent. Eye makeup removers are supposed to be powerful enoughproduct_47.jpg to break down the dye in your eye makeup, making it easier for removal; but while it is powerful enough to strip your eyes away from any waterproof makeup, it is also powerful enough to harm your eyes as well. For starters, most eye makeup removers are pure oil. They are all silicone based and silicone can be extremely harmful to your eyes themselves. It can be irritating and cause temporary redness and blurring of vision. As for those eye makeup removers claiming to be "oil-free", they too are silicone based but carry a lesser quantity. These are even worse however. They instead contain astringents like alcohol that can be even more damaging and drying to the delicate skin around the eye. So whats left to use? Wipes? Nope, unless they are certified organic then they contain the same formulas. So what do I use you ask? Well believe it or not my holy grail eye makeup remover is good old Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo! This was actually recommended to me by an eye doctor (for those who don't know I wore glasses from the age of 2 to 17!!!)  With it's 'no tears' formula, this is the most delicate soap on the market for eyes, so delicate that it's made for babies! I have washed even the most waterproof makeup off with this thing and it works like a charm. When I'm done washing, I have no red irritated eyes and no dryness either. Johnson & Johnson made money when inventing this 'no tears' formula! Try it for yourself, you can thank me later! Bouncing a ball.

Givenchy Phenomen' Eyes Mascara

I am the ultimate sucker when it comes to mascaras. Make a claim that you will make my itty bitty lashes long and luscious and trust mepehne%20yess-thumb-240x443.jpg that you will catch my attention; but this baby right here has REALLY caught my eye!!!! Givenchy has raised the bar for mascara wands all around the makeup counter by introducing their Phenomen' Eyes mascara. What makes this baby different? Well Givenchy has switched up the brush and has converted it to a sphereical brush which is supposed to reach every single eyelash. The idea is that this brush which is small enough, can reach each lash and coat them indivdually from root to tip, coating each lash with the tint. The formula which is made of elastomer will assist with an easier glide which eliminates uneccesary clumps for a more precise application and finish. The formula also includes water and polymer which is great for separating and lengthening; ultimatey giving you long and lush lashes!

Phenomen' Eyes will be available in stores beginning September 2008 and will come in black and brown.

REVIEW: Lancome Lash Fatale

I have short lashes; very short in my opinion...or maybe just not long enough for me. In my years of wearing makeup I have devoted most of my time to testing different mascaras and stumbling upon many failed promises of what should have been a result of lush, long and perfect lashes according to catchy ads and displays. But after soul searching for that perfect mascara, I can say that I have finally found my holy grail of all mascaras. Lancome....I love you for this one.

I first discoverd Lash Fatale at Sak's when it debuted and needed to just try it out. As soon as the makeup artist put it on me I was sold. After arriving home with it, yes there was a trial and error period.
For starters this is not your regular mascara and doesnt have your regular brush. The applicator is actually a three sided comb. If you don't practice with the applicator you are almost guarenteed to either stab yourself in the eye or get globs of tint on your lashes. I probably practiced for a whole day before getting the technique right. In my opinion I find that bringing the comb to the start of the lashes and sweeping upwards in a straight motion works best. As for getting the corners of your eyes, you can angle the position of your hand to get corners of your eyes. Once you have developed your technique, you will notice that with this mascara, one coat alone is probably all you will need. For a more dramatic look, more coats can be applied.
I definetly think that this mascara not only volumizes my lashes and makes them look longer, but when I go heavy on the coats I can certainly achieve that "fake lash" look; and people have certainly questioned me about it.

The only CON that I have about this product is that its rather small in size compared to other mascaras, for example a bottle of Fatale is only .23oz, unlike compared to a bottle of Diorshow which is .38 oz (average size for mascara).

Other than that, I LOVE this mascara. Some people may think otherwise, but I truly feel that anyone that has written negatively about this mascara on the web is simply because they didn't take their time to learn the much needed technique that is neccesary to apply this mascara.
